Fire Pit Media – Lava Stones, Fire Glass and Ceramic Logs

Fire pit media is what sits in the burner area of a fire feature: lava stones, fire glass and ceramic logs. It is not only decoration but part of the function – it covers the burner, spreads the gas evenly and gives the flame its shape.

Without media a gas fire feature burns less evenly and produces more soot. With the right grain size you get an even flame and cleaner combustion.

Which media for which purpose?

Lava stones are the robust, natural choice and store heat. Fire glass reflects the light of the flame for a more brilliant result. Ceramic logs create the look of a real wood fire without smoke, ash or refuelling – ideal if you love the atmosphere of a fireplace but not the effort. All three can be combined.

What to look for

• Grain size matched to the burner – the media must cover the burner openings without blocking them.
• Heat resistance – use only media approved for fire features.
• Calculate the quantity correctly – as a guide, allow a layer 1–2 cm deep across the whole burner area.
