Lava Stones & Fire Glass – the Right Burner Media for Your Fire Feature

Lava stones and fire glass are more than decoration: they cover the burner, spread the gas evenly and give the flame its shape. Without media, a gas fire feature burns unevenly and produces more soot – with the right grain size you get an even flame and cleaner combustion.

Both media suit gas and bioethanol operation. Lava stones store heat and release it steadily, while fire glass reflects the light of the flame for a clearer, more brilliant look.

Lava stone or fire glass – which suits which fire feature?

Lava stones are the robust, natural choice: they store heat, are hard-wearing and suit fire bowls and heavily used garden fire features especially well. Fire glass is the design-led choice: the uniformly shaped pieces reflect light and visually amplify the flame – ideal for table fires, table fireplaces and modern lounge fire tables. The two can be combined: a base layer of lava stone with fire glass as the visible top layer.

What to check before buying

• Grain size matched to the burner – the media must cover the burner openings without blocking them.
• Heat resistance – use material intended for fire features; decorative gravel from a DIY store is not suitable.
• Calculate the quantity correctly – as a guide, allow a layer 1–2 cm deep across the whole burner area.
• Choose the colour deliberately – dark stones emphasise the flame, light stones reflect more light into the room.
